natural cosmetics
Skin care and cosmetics based on natural ingredients are popular again. Sure, artificial stuff can be effective but those can't beat what mother nature has to offer.
Consumers have wised up. Most of today's cosmetics are made largely of petroleum derived ingredients, Propylene Glycol and other artificial ingredients which are bad for the environment and bad for us in the long run. Even some of the lab generated dyes used in cosmetics are subsequently banned by the FDA.
On top of that, lots of products claim to be natural. Entire businesses claim they use natural ingredients but for most of them, this is but a gimmick. The percentage of natural ingredients is minimal. The word natural is used too loosely.
It is so easy to beat the system. Add a tiny amount of herbal extracts or other natural ingredients and you can claim that the product contains natural ingredients. Something that is 100% natural and something that contains 0.5% natural ingredients can both be labelled as natural cosmetics.
To combat this, consumers should look at the ingredients list. The ingredients listed first are the ones that make up the bulk of the cosmetic product. Awareness of the brands that are truly natural can help us make the right choice.
While most cosmetics derive their colors from the lab, some still derive their colors from natural sources. Plant dyes, different colored earths, the world is full of natural dyes that can be incorporated in makeup.

ingredients are largely derived from what nature has to offer.
Take Burt's Bees for example. Most of their products are made 100% out of natural ingredients. They started off as bee farmers selling honey and beeswax. Instead of petrol derived wax, their creams use wax made by the honey bee. Likewise, the other ingredients are natural as far as possible. Even the colors are from natural sources.
Jason Natural is another brand to look out for as that brand does not use petroleum derived ingredients either.
