how does sunscreen work
Different sunscreens work in different ways. Some work by physically blocking out the sun. These may contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide which reflect away the sun's rays. Some provide chemical protection. These typically have to be applied at least 30 minutes before you go out in the sun.

The SPF factor of the sunscreen indicates how long you can stay in the sun before getting sun burnt. An SPF of 15 means you can stay in the sun 15 times longer than if you go out without any sun protection.

Ideally, for adequate sun protection, you should use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Sunscreens with SPF of above 30 don't bring much additional benefit though but that is a matter of personal preference. Whatever your choice, with the links between skin cancer, premature wrinkles and excessive sun exposure, it is wise to always use sunscreen whenever you are exposed to the sun.
